Job Description: Quality Manager

Reports to: VP Manufacturing

Department: Quality

Summary Statement

This key position is responsible for ensuring all quality processes, including company and ISO 9001, have been implemented and are being complied with during all stages of processes. Responsibility for managing, planning, coordinating, and heading the quality control program designed to ensure continuous production / service consistent with established company standards. This position will oversee a team of Quality Assurance Inspectors to ensure that quality is maintained throughout all operations.

Job Duties

  • Oversees the development and analysis of statistical data and specifications to determine present standards and establish proposed quality and reliability expectancy.
  • Formulates and maintains quality control objectives, and coordinates objectives with production procedures in cooperation with other managers to maximize quality and reliability and to minimize costs.
  • Manages, through intermediate personnel, workers engaged in activities to ensure continuous control over materials, facilities, services, and products.
  • Develops and implements methods and procedures for monitoring work activities, such as preparation of records of expenditures, progress reports, etc., in order to inform management of current status or work activities.
  • Works within a Quality Assurance laboratory or in-process inspection
  • Uses the following equipment or techniques to test steel: charpy, spectrometer, calibration equipment, chemical analysis for zinc coating
  • Inspects steel angles and plates in accordance with Quality Assurance specifications
  • Coordinates internal and external audits as per ISO requirements
  • Reports all non-conformances and issues related to quality. Compiles quality statistics and reports
  • Responsible to close all non-conformances by administering corrective actions to the department involved
  • Ensures the resolution of all quality issues related to customers and suppliers
  • Ensures that incoming materials are tested according to specifications
  • Responsible for calibration of measuring and testing equipment and the proper maintenance of records
  • Plans, promotes, and organizes training activities related to quality and reliability.
  • Analyzes and resolves work problems, or assists employees in solving work problems.
  • May recruit, hire, train staff, evaluate employee performance, and recommend or initiate promotions, transfers, and disciplinary action.
  • Interprets company policy to employees and enforces company policy and practices.
  • May investigate customer complaints regarding quality and make appropriate adjustments
  • Perform all quality checks in accordance to the Quality System
  • Other duties as may be determined

Work Environment & Conditions:

  • Manufacturing environment, including CNC machinery, grinding, pickling, galvanizing, etc.
  • Requires long periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, twisting, and sitting.
  • Lifting up to 50-pounds or more to accomplish work tasks as may be necessary.

 Education & Experience:

  • Associate Degree or bachelor’s degree in quality, metallurgical, or related discipline; a minimum of 8+ years as a Quality Manager in a manufacturing or fabrication shop. Preference given for quality certification or specialized training.
  • Prior experience in ISO implementation is desired; strong preference given for ISO 9001, 14001, and OHSAS 18001 standards; p
  • Possesses knowledge of measuring and testing equipment used in steel manufacturing and hot dip galvanizing
  • Lead by example in areas of ethics, performance, compliance, etc.
  • Effective communication with others; work well and interact with all levels of employees, customers, and vendors.
  • Clear and effective written and oral communication.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Must possess a valid driver license with clear record.
